Junior High Procedures

Preparing to record the audition:
Each singer must be on a separate tape or CD.
Use only new, high quality tapes, CDs, and recording equipment.
Listen to each recording to make sure it is complete and audible.
Each tape/CD must be clearly labeled with the singer’s name, grade, and voice part. Rewind the tape prior to mailing.
Absolutely no editing or enhancement through computer software or other means.
Recording the audition:
The recorded audition has three parts that must appear in the order listed:
- Spoken introduction: at the beginning of the recording, the singer must clearly speak his or her name, grade level, and voice part.
- Scales:
The sopranos and altos must sing two major scales ascending and descending using the starting pitches indicated for their part below. Scales must be sung a cappella, using solfege, numbers, or a neutral syllable. Tempo: mm = 66 to 80 (one pitch = one beat)
Voice Part Starting Pitches (mC = middle C)
Soprano 1. E above mC
2. A above mC
Alto 1. E above mC
2. A below mC
The tenors and the basses must sing two 5-note major scales ascending and descending using the starting pitches indicated for their part below.Scales must be sung a cappella, using solfege, numbers, or a neutral syllable. Tempo: mm = 66 to 80 (one pitch = one beat)
Voice Part Starting Pitches (mC = middle C)
Tenor 1. ascending starting on A below mC (A, B, C#, D, E, D, C#, B, A)
2. descending starting on G below mC (G, A, B, C, D, C, B, A, G)
Bass 1. ascending starting on D below mC (D, E, F#, G, A, G, F#, E, D)
2. descending starting on F below mC (F, G, A, Bb, C, Bb, A, G, F)

Students must sing the audition portion ( listed above) with the accompaniment ONLY. The student’s voice part MUST NOT be played. No one may sing with the student. The audition piece must be performed from measure 22 ( page 4) through measure 54 ( page 8).
AUDITION FORM:
*Fill out one form for all your entries. Print the information on the audition form and check to make sure all information requested is complete.
*List singers by voice part and alphabetize the last names within each part. If you are submitting more than 10 recordings, copy the form as needed.
*Be sure each tape/CD has the student’s name, voice part, and grade clearly marked.
*Include a $7 per student entry fee. Please make checks payable to LA-ACDA, one check per school or organization.
*Place your recordings, entry form, check, and a copy of your current ACDA membership card in a box or cushioned mailing envelope.YOUR FORMS MUST BE CURRENT, not expired.

Junior High Teacher Info
The 2008 Junior High All State Choir will rehearse and perform in conjunction with the LA-ACDA Fall Vocal Conference in Baton Rouge October 16-18. 2008. The most oustanding Seventh, eighth, and ninth grade boys and girls will be chosen to participate in the clinic and concert performance. Our clinician for this choir is BOB HORTON, PRESIDENT of the TEXAS ACDA Organization.
The Junior High All State Choir will register at 4:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon ( Oct. 16)and participate in their first rehearsal with Mr. Horton immediately following at 5:30. Rehearsals will be held throughout the day Friday and Saturday, and the concert will be presented in the afternoon on Saturday, October 18 at the conference site, the Holiday Inn Select in Baton Rouge.
The audition procedure requires the submission of a cassette tape or CD and $7.00 entry fee. Only teachers who are active ACDA members may enter students. If you would like to enter students, but are not a member of ACDA, you may join by completing the application in this newsletter. Do not send your membership application with your tapes or CDs. Send membership forms to the ACDA National headquarters. Specific information regarding the audition procedure follows. The deadline for submitting tapes/CDs and applications is FRIDAY, August 29, 2008 with all submissions received by September 5, 2008. Recordings will be judged by a panel of teachers on Saturday, September 6th.
Do not send your recordings in a manner that requires a signature for delivery! When no one is available to sign, these packages are sent to the post office, UPS, or FedEx requiring someone to make arrangements to retrieve them. THEY WILL NOT BE RETRIEVED!
You will be notified via e-mail once your package arrives.
Directors, you are a vital part of this audition process. Please ensure your singer’s success by adhering to the directions and assisting your singers in producing a high quality audition recording. In addition, please have students check their schedules carefully before submitting and audition recording. Do not submit recordings for students that cannot meet the rehearsal and performance requirements, financial responsibilities, or fulfill the audition requirements accurately.
A panel of ACDA directors will adjudicate the recordings on Saturday, September 6th, 2008. . The singers that submit the best audition recordings will be selected to participate in the Junior High All State Choir. Teachers will be notified of their students’ selection via e-mail on September 6, 2008 and the music and student registration information will be mailed on Monday, September 8, 2008.PLEASE NOTE: a new procedure will take place this year. ALL DIRECTORS are expected to mail ALL of their accepted All State form and fees in ONE PACKET directly to the All State Chair. PARENTS WILL NOT MAIL THEIR OWN FORMS! In addition, all. Directors are expected to work with their singers to prepare the music before they arrive in Baton Rouge.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All directors will be notified of audition results via e-mail. Be sure to include and accurate, working e-mail address with your audition form. You will also need to set your e-mail account to receive a bulk or mass mailing. In some cases, e-mails sent to a large number of addresses will go to a “SPAM” folder and deleted. Please make necessary adjustments to your e-mail for the audition weekend.
A practice/audition accompaniment track is available from Jude Wilson. You are encouraged to purchase this very helpful tool from Jude and use the included accompaniment track for the audition recordings. However, your singers will not be penalized if you chose to provide your own accompaniment.Students MUST sing with an accompaniment, not a capella for the audition piece.

Materials must be sent in ONE PACKET by their respective teacher, they cannot be mailed by students or parents this year!! PLEASE NOTE THIS IMPORTANT CHANGE!!
All audition materials must be postmarked by AUGUST 29, 2008 and received by September 5, 2008 . All deadlines will be strictly enforced! NO EXCEPTIONS CAN BE MADE!
